A growing online petition demanding a fair judicial process for Queen Silekunola Naomi Ogunwusi, former wife of the Ooni of Ife, has become the focal point of public discourse following the tragic Ibadan stampede that claimed the lives of over 30 children.
The stampede occurred during a charity food distribution organised by Queen Naomi in Ibadan.
The event, meant to alleviate hunger among children, turned deadly, leading to her arrest alongside two others. The trio has since been arraigned in court and remanded in custody pending further investigations.
The petition, titled “Demand Fair Judicial Process for Queen Silekunola Naomi Ogunwusi,” was launched yesterday on change.org, by a supporter identified as Yetunde Ola.
A link to the petition was also shared on Queen Naomi’s Instagram profile.
Addressed to the Supreme Court of Nigeria and the National Judicial Council (NJC), it calls for transparency and impartiality in handling Queen Naomi’s case.
So far, it has gathered 9,117 signatures, edging closer to its 10,000-signature goal.
The petition defends Queen Naomi’s intentions, stating, “Her actions were driven by an earnest intention to alleviate the suffering of hungry children when, regrettably, an unfortunate stampede occurred.”
It further urges judicial authorities to ensure fairness: “We must hold the judicial system in Nigeria accountable for their actions and ensure that they remain transparent, fair, and unbiased in their proceedings.”
Supporters argue that Queen Naomi’s philanthropic efforts should not be overshadowed by the tragedy.
“It is important to remember that Queen Naomi’s actions were driven not by malicious intent, but by the noble goal of supporting underprivileged children,” the petition asserts.
The petitioner’s plea is simple but compelling: “Give Queen Silekunola Naomi a fair trial, unaffected by bias and calumny. We reinforce our commitment to stand by Queen Naomi, championing for justice, fairness, and truth.”
The petition has drawn attention to the complexities surrounding the case, with some highlighting the challenges of organising large-scale charity events in high-demand areas.
While critics have questioned the event’s planning, supporters of Queen Naomi emphasise her long-standing commitment to humanitarian causes.
As investigations continue and the case proceeds in court, the petition reflects a groundswell of public support for the former queen, urging judicial fairness in what has become one of the most discussed incidents in the last few days.
