Meta is racing to create Ray-Ban augmented reality (AI) glasses that could eventually replace smartphones, signaling a bold new direction for the tech giant.
Despite scaling back his ambitious plans for a metaverse—a 3D virtual world filled with avatars—CEO Mark Zuckerberg has now set his sights on positioning Meta as a leader in artificial intelligence (AI).
The company has invested billions in AI development, including creating its own open-source large language models. This pivot reflects Zuckerberg’s belief that AI will play a central role in Meta’s future success.
Luke Alvarez, a founding partner at Hiro Capital and an investor in gaming and metaverse technologies, highlighted how Meta’s AI and AR initiatives are converging.
“What’s interesting about the Ray-Bans and the Orion project is how Meta’s AI strategy aligns with mixed reality,” Alvarez explained. “Zuckerberg’s goal seems to be to own a significant part of the next-generation operating system.”
By integrating advanced AI capabilities into wearable tech like AR glasses, Meta is positioning itself to transform how people interact with technology, aiming to dominate the future of digital interfaces.
