Nigerian superstar, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has expressed his pride and support for his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, following the latter’s intervention in the case of a young man sentenced to death for stealing a chicken in Osun State.
Davido shared his excitement on social media, praising his uncle’s swift action and highlighting the importance of fairness and justice in Nigeria’s legal system.
Governor Adeleke, who has faced widespread criticism for the harsh sentence, acted quickly after reports emerged of Segun Olowookere, who has spent 14 years in prison, being sentenced to death by hanging for stealing fowls and eggs.
The governor expressed his dismay, stating, “Osun is a land of justice and equity. We must ensure fairness and protect the sanctity of lives.”
In response, Adeleke directed the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice to investigate the case thoroughly and begin the process of granting the man a prerogative of mercy.
He assured the public that the case is receiving his “direct attention” and is being treated with urgency.
The case has sparked national outrage, with many pointing out the irony of severe punishments for petty crimes while corrupt politicians who steal billions often go unpunished. Critics argue that Nigeria’s justice system is deeply flawed and selective.
Davido’s support has brought additional attention to the case, with the singer using his platform to amplify the call for judicial reform.
