President-elect Donald Trump has promised to advocate for the elimination of Daylight Saving Time (DST), calling it an unnecessary burden on the U.S.
In a post on X, Trump wrote, “The Republican Party will use its best efforts to eliminate Daylight Saving Time, which has a small but strong constituency, but shouldn’t! Daylight Saving Time is inconvenient, and very costly to our Nation.”
Daylight Saving Time, the practice of setting clocks forward by one hour during warmer months to extend evening daylight, has long been a controversial issue. While proponents argue it saves energy and provides more daylight for evening activities, critics highlight its disruptive effects on sleep, routines, and the economy.
DST is observed in most U.S. states from March to November. However, many states and countries around the world have abandoned or are reconsidering the practice due to mixed evidence about its benefits and drawbacks.
Trump’s remarks appear to align with a growing push to end the practice permanently.
The post has sparked debate on X, with supporters praising the proposal and opponents defending DST as a useful tool for energy conservation. It remains to be seen how the Republican-led Congress will address the issue in the coming months.
