Nigerian pop sensation, D’banj, has opened up in a jaw-dropping statement about the highs of his music career and the bitter fallout with his longtime collaborator, Don Jazzy.
The artist, whose real name is Oladapo Oyebanjo, revealed how his decision to go solo led to one of the biggest regrets of his life, leaving fans emotional and excited for what may lie ahead.
In the candid statement, D’banj recounted the meteoric rise of Mo’Hits Records, the music label he co-founded with Don Jazzy, which paved the way for what is now celebrated globally as Afrobeats.
“In my prime, I was making over N10 million in a week. I was so hot that I became the gateway to what you now call Afrobeats,” D’banj reflected, detailing how international music icons like Kanye West would personally reach out to him and Don Jazzy to understand the booming African music market.
He fondly recalled collaborating with American rapper Snoop Dogg, who referred to him as his “cousin” due to their seamless chemistry beyond just music. D’banj also playfully reminisced about his undeniable appeal to Nollywood stars like Genevieve Nnaji and Ini Edo, joking about how they all wanted the ‘Koko,’ though he humorously claimed to be “a man of peace.”
However, the heart of his message lay in his reflections on what he lost. D’banj admitted that the bond he shared with Don Jazzy was irreplaceable, despite his earlier belief that he could succeed without him.
“It all fell apart when I told Don Jazzy I could do it alone,” he confessed, adding that no one has since been able to provide him with the signature beats that Don Jazzy, affectionately known as Don Baba J, created for him.
“I have watched Don Baba J prove his worth over time, as he has raised two generations of artists,” D’banj added, acknowledging the legendary producer’s impact on the Nigerian music industry.
In a heartwarming turn, D’banj revealed that he and Don Jazzy have made peace, with hopes of collaborating once again.
“Only he understands what makes me who I am,” he said.
