Nigeria’s Federal Government has announced the renaming of the National Theatre in Iganmu, Surulere, to the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts.

This tribute comes as the nation and admirers worldwide celebrate the 90th birthday of the Nobel laureate and literary giant, Professor Wole Soyinka.

In a statement released today, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu lauded Soyinka’s unparalleled contributions to literature and his relentless fight for human dignity and justice. The announcement precedes the climax of numerous local and international activities honouring Soyinka, culminating tomorrow on July 13.

Celebrations have spanned the globe, including a symposium and poetry reading in Rabat, Morocco, organized by the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco and the Pan African Writers Association (PAWA) on July 9.

Prof. Wole Soyinka and President Bola Tinubu

Soyinka, the first African to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986, is recognized not only for his literary achievements but also for his activism and dedication to societal justice. Having survived prostate cancer, his 90th birthday is seen as a testament to his resilience and enduring legacy.

President Tinubu, who personally signed the statement, highlighted Soyinka’s diverse talents as a playwright, actor, poet, human rights advocate, composer, and singer. He emphasized Soyinka’s influence that transcends Nigeria, touching lives globally and inspiring many to stand against oppression.

From his early efforts to broker peace during Nigeria’s civil war to his vocal opposition against apartheid in South Africa and racism in the United States, Soyinka’s commitment to speaking truth to power remains unwavering.

Reflecting on their shared history in the struggle for democracy in Nigeria, President Tinubu praised Soyinka for his courage and leadership, especially during the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election. In exile, Soyinka galvanized opposition against military dictatorship, contributing significantly to the restoration of democracy in Nigeria.

As the world celebrates Soyinka’s enduring impact on literature, human rights, and societal justice, President Tinubu extended his wishes for Soyinka’s continued health and creative fulfillment, looking forward to his centennial.

The renaming of the National Theatre stands as a symbol of Nigeria’s deep respect and appreciation for Soyinka, a national treasure and global icon.
