The police command in Kano State has confirmed the death of four persons in an explosion near a nursery school, Winners Kids Academy, in Kano this morning.
Several school children are also believed to have been trapped in the debris of the school building, which collapsed due to the impact of the explosion.
An online video of the explosion shows pupils of the school with bruises crying after being rescued from the collapsed school building.
It also shows parents of pupils who are still trapped under the structure, as well as sympathisers, desperately looking for means to rescue the remaining victims.
Mr Samaila Dikko, the state Commissioner of Police, confirmed the incident a radio and television broadcast in Kano.
Dikko said that the unfortunate incident was caused by a gas explosion at a welding point near a primary school on Aba Road in Sabon Gari.
He said that rescue workers were making efforts to rescue people trapped in the building where the explosion occurred.
Dikko urged residents of the state to remain calm as the situation was under control.
NewsmakersNG learnt that the explosion resulted in damage in some other buildings in the area.
