Three protesters were killed in Osun State today as the Governor, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola, survived a mob attack at an #EndSARS rally in Osogbo, the state capital.
Hoodlums, armed with guns and cutlasses, infiltrated the protesters and swooped on the Governor at Olaiya junction, while he was addressing the #EndSARS protesters in the state capital.
Oyetola had joined protesters in the walk from Alekuwodo area to Olaiya junction. He sang with the protesters and promised them that their demands would be looked into.
He declared support for their peaceful agitations, which he described as part of the democratic process.
But, while he was addressing the youths, the armed hoodlums attacked. They hurled missiles at the Governor’s car, smashed the windshield and also lodged an axe in its door.
A staccato of gunshots was heard as security aides made spirited moves to whisk the governor out of the scene.
Three persons reportedly died in the end.
One unidentified person died at Ladoke Akintola Teaching Hospital, Osogbo.
A doctor in the hospital confirmed that the victim died of gunshot injuries.
A security operative also confirmed that two others died at the Old Garage end of Osogbo.
“Three persons are in the mortuary after the attack. Our DJ and two others were shot dead,” a member of #RevolutionNow Movement, OlaOluwa Owoeye, said.
NewsmakersNG also learnt that shortly after the governor arrived at the scene, the Osun State Coordinator of the #RevolutionNow Movement, Olawale Bakare, had demanded an apology from him for refusing to engage the protesters after nine days of protest.
Bakare reportedly demanded immediate arrest and prosecution of a leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers identified as Asiri Eniba.
Eniba was accused of sending thugs to attack the protesters.
While responding to the demands, Oyetola, after an apology for failing to address them since the protest started, promised to make an enquiry from the Commissioner of Police to ascertain the involvement of the NURTW boss in the alleged attack.
Oyetola also denied sending thugs to attack the protesters and promised to pay the hospital bills of all those injured during the protest.
