A 24-year-old Nigerian, Chukwudi Kosi Ezenyi, has emerged the first black president of the University of Plymouth in the United Kingdom.
Ezenyi made history by beating two other Britons to end the 28-year white dominance in the leadership of the university’s Students Union Government.
He pulled a total of 1817 votes out of the 3412 to stop the other two contenders, Jennike Smye and William Styles, who got 925 and 631 votes to place second and third respectively with 39 votes voided.
The victory of Ezenyi from Nnobi in Idemili local government area of Anambra State is remarkable because a winner was required to secure at least 1706 to emerge president but he scored 1817 to make Nigeria proud.
Until now, Ezenyi was the Vice President of the University of Plymouth Students Union in Britain.
A graduate of two first degrees is currently studying for his master’s programme in Operations and Supply Chain Management.
He had graduated in Computer systems and Network and the second first degree in International Trade and Operations Management.
In a brief phone chat with the students Union President, he said that he was very confident he would win the election because he had a very good team to pull the curtain down.
He said that his role as vice president and his campaign promises which he ensured he kept endeared him to all despite race, colour or religion amongst fellow students.
He added that he would leave a very positive legacy that would earn high respect for not only his fellow Nigerians but other black students in the diaspora.
He urged fellow black students to be broad-minded in all they do and ensure they eschew all forms of vices, crimes, drugs and anything that would negatively affect them or their country.
According to him, Africa has a lot of potentials in the youths but needs to harness them for the effective growth of the continent.
Reacting, Ezenyi’s father, a retired senior manager with the Central Bank of Nigeria, Chief Chukwudi Ezenyi, said he was grateful to God that the values the family imbibed in the young man were sustained.
The High Chief of Nnobi, Ichie Chukwudi Ezenyi, said the only way the society would move forward was for everybody to collectively ensure that real values were sustainably imbibed in the younger generation to ensure we harvest a positive society.
