Police authorities in Zamfara have moved to ensure a violent-free election in the state as Nigerians go to the polls this month.

The state police spokesman, SP Mohammed Shehu, revealed that the Commissioner of Police (CP) Zanna Ibrahim has made efforts to ensure that all political campaigns, rallies and other political activities are held in an orderly manner across Zamfara.

Shehu, in a statement sent to NewsmakersNG says, “Today 2nd February, 2019, the Commissioner of Police, Zamfara State Police Command CP Zanna M. Ibrahim mni, held an operational meeting with Area Commanders, DPOs, Heads of Departments and Tactical Unit Commanders at the Police Command Headquarters, Gusau.

“During the meeting, the CP reminded them of Police Constitutional Mandate to provide adequate security coverage before, during and after the 2019 general elections. He charged them to be responsive, responsible and professional in the discharge of their assignment. He warned them to take note of the fact that cases bordering on political thuggery, vandalism of political party billboards/posters, hate speeches, use of offensive weapons of any caliber will not be tolerated and must be checked. He enjoined them to always collaborate with members of other security services, the INEC, members of the public and the press in ensuring the success of this national assignment.

“The CP further directed all Area Commanders and DPOs to ensure adequate security of INEC materials and the staff, NYSC Corp members, Election observers both Foreign and the domestic deployed to the state.

“On the issue of campaigns and rallies by political parties in the state, the CP has directed that, police officers and men deployed to this crucial assignment must exhibit a high sense of commitment and professionalism throughout the exercise.

“He advised politicians and their supporters to respect the rules of engagement so that the desire to conduct free, fair, credible and non-violent exercise will be achieved.

“He assures members of the public, especially politicians, of police neutrality as well as level playing ground for all. The CP appeals for continued support and cooperation from members of the public in this regards.”
