Mohamed Salah gave Egypt a glimmer of hope by scoring a penalty after the Pharaohs had fallen three goals behind Russia in their FIFA 2018 World Cup match, played in Saint Petersburg this evening.

But the match ended 3-1, dashing any hope of progressing in the tournament for Egypt.

Defender, Ahmed Fathi, deflected a low shot across goal into his own net for Russia’s first goal
The goal came in the early minutes of the second half.

Denis Cheryshev netted the second in the 59th minute to become joint top scorer along with Cristiano Roanldo.

Artem Dzyuba sent Russia into the last-16 with the third goal in the 62nd minute.

The striker picked up the ball on the edge of the box, took it past a defender and fired home… before giving a salute to the Russian nation.

As the game wore out, the Russians maintained good discipline by slowing down the game and retaining possession of the ball.

The stadium erupted in celebration as the centre referee blew the final whistle.

Camera showed Salah looking down at floor as he walked straight down the tunnel.

Russia are as good as through to the last-16 of the World Cup, with Egypt as good as out of the tournament.

Confirmation of that will be Uruguay avoiding defeat against Saudi Arabia tomorrow.

Today’s game was Egypt’s second after losing its opening game to Uruguay by a lone goal.
