The Lagos State House of Assembly, on Thursday, adopted a motion for the upward review of the salary of traditional rulers in the state.
The motion called on the state governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, to direct the Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs to consider an upward review of traditional rulers’ salary
The motion was moved by Mr. Lanre Ogunyemi, representing Ojo State Constituency II.
Other lawmakers that supported the motion include: Sanai Agunbiade, Olumuyiwa Jimoh, Adebayo Osinowo, Princess (Mrs) Adefunmilayo Tejuoso, Dayo Saka Fafunmi, Sola Giwa, Tunde Braimoh and Hakeem Sokunle.
While canvassing support for the motion, the lawmaker observed that if traditional rulers were encouraged to perform their statutory duties, “their wealth of experience will fast track desired change in their various communities and add value to governance.”
The lawmakers unanimously supported the motion, which they all agreed would enhance the welfare of the traditional rulers and also serve as encouragement to them in carrying out their duties.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, also lent his support to the motion motion.
The lawmakers also urged traditional rulers in the state to make Yoruba Language the primary medium of communication during palace functions.
