Lagos State University (LASU) will soon get a 6000-bed hostel.

The institution is currently non-residential.

The visitor to the university and the governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, disclosed this at 21st Convocation of the school, on Thursday.

The ceremony held at the auditorium of the university’s main campus, Ojo, in Lagos.

Ambode said the project would be executed through a public-private-partnership (PPP) arrangement.

The governor noted that the move was part of the ongoing efforts to upgrade the institution’s infrastructure to world class standard.

In his welcome address, the vice chancellor, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun, disclosed that the university had achieved another feat with accreditation of the school of dentistry of it’s college of medicine.

This makes LASU the first state government-owned university to be so accredited. The university was also recently adjudged the number one state university in the country.

Three notable Nigerians, Chief Kessignton Adebutu, Mrs. Folorunso Alakija and former head of the Nigerian Universities Commission, Prof. Peter Okebukola, were conferred with honorary doctorate degree at the ceremony.

Dignitaries that witnessed the occasion include, Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu; Lagos State deputy governor, Mrs. Aderanti Olubule; Chancellor of the university, Justice George Oguntade (rtd) and the Pro-Chancellor, Prof. Adebayo Ninalowo, among others.

Meanwhile, the 60th inaugural lecture of the university, with the title, “Of Growing and Dying Well: A Gerontologist at Work”, will hold on March 28, at the auditorium of the main campus.

A statement by the public relations officer of the institution, Mr. Ademola Adekoya, said the lecture will be delivered by Prof. Elias Wahab, a Professor of Sociology and the Dean of Social Sciences.
