A 91-year-old Professor of Law and traditional chief in Ibadan, Professor Ajagbe Toriola Oyewo, has made history by emerging the oldest person to be elevated into the prestigious rank of Senior Advicate of Nigeria (SAN).

Oyewo is on the list of 72 persons, including ten academics and 62 advocates, whose elevation to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria was announced, yesterday, by the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee.

His daughter, Mrs Adekitan Adeagbo, broke the news of her father’s elevation on her Facebook page yesterday evening.

Adeagbo, who is a broadcaster with the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS), wrote: “Congratulations to my father, Professor (Chief) Toriola Ajagbe Oyewo, as he is elevated to the most prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) at the age of 91.

“Daddy, no doubt, the Lord has been merciful unto you as He preserved you to get to the pinnacle of the profession you have been passionate about. Who says age is a barrier to success in life? This elevation is divine.

“Yours has proven to us that with determination, hardwork, persistence and resilience, among others, the sky is just the begining and not the limit for great successes. I am so proud of you and I promise I shall also make you proud in life.”

A statement issued in Abuja by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court and Secretary of the LPPC, said the new SANs would be inaugurated on December 8 2021 at its premises.

He said, “The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee at its 149th plenary session held today, October 21 2021, has elevated 72 legal practitioners to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria. The rank of SAN is awarded as a mark of excellence to members of the legal profession who have distinguished themselves as advocates and academics.

“The LPPC also wishes to notify prospective applicants that the application for the 2022 exercise would not be open/commence until a date to be announced in January 2022.

“In the meantime, the LPPC wishes to notify the public that it has set up a sub-committee to review the 2018 guidelines for the award of the rank from the 2023 application year.”
