At least eight people have been confirmed dead following a multiple-truck collision that occurred early Thursday morning on the Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, causing a massive traffic gridlock that extended deep into parts of Lagos State.
The crash, which happened at about 6.29am on the outbound section of the expressway, involved six articulated vehicles.
Witnesses said one of the trucks, a 14-tyre vehicle, and a container-laden lorry caught fire, while another truck transporting cartons of biscuits spilled its contents across the highway.
Another truck reportedly rammed into the road barrier, with its cabin plunging into the nearby river.
Emergency responders from the Federal Road Safety Corps and the police were on the scene, working to remove the wreckage and clear the debris from the affected section of the road.
The incident caused severe traffic congestion that spread beyond the Kara Bridge to the Ojodu-Berger axis and Ogunnusi Road in Lagos, leaving motorists stranded for hours.
Recovery operations were still ongoing at press time, as authorities battled to restore the free flow of traffic on the busy highway.
