Eminent Nigerians gathered in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, over the weekend, to celebrate Navy Captain Caleb Omoniyi Olubolade (rtd.), the former Military Administrator (MILAD) of the state, on his 70th birthday.
The three-day celebration was marked by tributes, colorful events, and a reflection on Olubolade’s impactful legacy.
Thousands of Bayelsans turned out to honor the retired officer from Ipoti-Ekiti, credited with laying the groundwork for the state’s development during his tenure as MILAD from June 1997 to July 1998.
Bayelsa, carved out of Rivers State by the late General Sani Abacha, witnessed its early developmental strides under Olubolade’s leadership.
The celebrations, which spanned multiple venues, including the Exco Chamber of the Government House, the DSP Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall, the Samson Siasia Sports Complex, and a thanksgiving church service, showcased Olubolade and his wife, Mrs. Mopelola Olubolade, elegantly dressed in Ijaw attire.
Dignitaries who attended the events included former President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan; Governor Douye Diri and his wife, Dr. Gloria Diri; Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo; and the Amayanabo of Twon-Brass, King Alfred Diete-Spiff. Others included Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John Jonah (rtd.), King Joshua Igbugburu of Bomo Kingdom, and Rear Admiral Ayodeji Olugbode, Hydrographer of the Nigerian Navy.
Former President Jonathan, represented by his wife, praised Olubolade’s developmental initiatives in Bayelsa, describing them as foundational and enduring. Governor Diri, in a special tribute, commended Olubolade’s selfless service, calling him “a disciplined and revered leader”.
Olubolade, who served as a minister in three different ministries during Jonathan’s administration, is recognized for his disciplined leadership and integrity. His achievements as MILAD were highlighted in a special documentary and program brochure during the celebrations.
Expressing gratitude to the people of Bayelsa for their love, Olubolade recalled his time working with Jonathan and other leaders in the state.
“Bayelsans are loving people, and their support inspires me to consider Bayelsa as my home,” he said.
The celebrations included a football match, athletic relays, cultural displays, and choir performances at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex, which was one of Olubolade’s projects. Guests were treated to branded gifts, food, and drinks, adding to the vibrant atmosphere.
In his exhortation titled ‘While There is Life,’ Apostle Zilly Aggrey encouraged hope and resilience, emphasizing the power of living purposefully.
Responding to the outpouring of love, Olubolade expressed his appreciation: “Your presence at my 70th birthday celebration has made this day unforgettable. I am deeply grateful for your kindness and support.”
The event was a fitting tribute to a man described as “the COO (Chief Operating Officer) of Bayelsa,” who continues to inspire through his legacy of selfless service and enduring contributions to the state.
