Fifty-seven international and local squash players are competing for $25,000 and $10,000 prizes at the second edition of Chamberlain Squash Open (CSO) starting today in Lagos.
According to the organisers, 32 Professional Squash Association (PSA) ranked foreign players and 25 local players will compete for the prize money in the men and women categories respectively.
This year’s tournament holding at Teslim Balogun Stadium promises to be bigger and better than last year’s edition.
NewsmakersNG learnt that the winners will also go home with trophies and lots of gifts for fans who will be part of the competition from start to finish.
“This time we are using an all glass court that has a larger gallery to accommodate more fans who have duly registered online to be part of the event,” Chamberlain Usoh, the Promoter of the tournament said.
He added: “This year’s tournament is duly sanctioned by Professional Squash Association, and the World Squash Federation (WSF) has designated Nasser Sayed Zahran Mohamed as our main tournament referee. His presence and expertise will really impact on the quality of officiating.”
The qualifying rounds of the tournament will hold from May 7 and 8. But the main draw matches will start on May 9, which is the opening ceremony.
The objective of CSO, according to Usoh, is to contribute immensely to the development of Squash at the grassroot and provide a robust platform that will birth and nurture a new generation of squash players who will proudly hoist the country’s flag on the international sporting arena.
Tom Ford from England won last year’s men’s final, while Yemisi Olatunji of Nigeria won the women’s final.
This year’s tournament is supported by Century Energy, Remita, Lagos State Sports Commission and Awfod Foods Nigeria Limited.
