A 54-year-old man, Edward Odega, has been arrested by the Delta State Police Command for allegedly sexually abusing his three daughters over a period of seven years, police confirmed on Saturday.

The case was uncovered during a school outreach programme conducted by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for the Ugborikoko Division, CSP Temi Agbede Zuokumor.

During the session, which encouraged students to report abuse, one of Odega’s daughters broke down in tears, prompting a classmate to check on her.

That classmate later revealed that she, too, had been abused by Odega during visits to their home.

The victims are three daughters, aged 24, 15, and 13.

The eldest, now 24, said her father first began having sex with her when she was 12 years old and in Primary Six.

The youngest claimed the abuse started as recently as June this year.

During interrogation, Odega admitted the abuse.

He told police that he had been sleeping with all three daughters “for seven years now.” When asked why, he blamed “evil urges” and said, “it is the devil’s work.”

He added that the acts always took place in his house, that he did not physically restrain them, and that what he was doing “breaks my heart.”

Preliminary investigations by the police also suggest that Odega may have abused other girls, including friends of his daughters.

According to reports, the man’s wife left him long ago, leaving him alone with the children.

SP Edafe Bright, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed Odega’s confession and said he would remain in custody as investigations continued.

The victims are receiving medical and psychological support, and the police emphasised that school outreach schemes play a vital role in enabling children to speak out.
