Tragedy struck in Benin, Edo State this morning as a BMW sedan 5 series killed four sisters, one of whom was pregnant, at Uselu along Lagos-Benin Expressway.
Police also reportedly shot five of the youths who were protesting the incident which happened around 6.30am.
The driver who was in the car with his wife reportedly lost control and overrun the four women who were waiting by the roadside.
Angered by the incident, the youths had reportedly mounted roadblock on the expressway, forcing the police to intervene to disperse them.
In the process, five persons among the youths were said to have sustained gunshot wounds.
NewsmakersNG learnt that the police left with two of the injured youths while they retrieved the four bodies of the victims and deposited them at the nearby University of Benin Teaching Hospital.
The driver and his wife who trapped in their vehicle which had skidded into the gutter were also reportedly rescued by the police.
The Edo state Police Public Relations Officer, Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed the incident.
“It was unfortunate, our men are there to restore peace and they are doing their best. It was an accident and It’s quite unfortunate,” he said.
