Police authorities said four officers were arrested over the reported assassination attempt on the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, at his residence in Abuja, in the early hours of yesterday.
Also detained over the incident is a personnel of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps.
Police said on their verified Twitter handle, @PoliceNG, late yesterday that the arrested officers, whose identities were withheld, were on guard duty at the residence of the Deputy Senate President during the incident.
They, however, said the preliminary investigation showed that the incident was a burglary contrary to the claims of assassination made by Ekweremadu.
Part of the tweet reads: “Preliminary investigation carried out so far did not reveal assassination attempt on the life of the Dep Senate President, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu and his family but a case of Burglary.
“However, an investigation is still ongoing to determine if there is any other motive behind the offence.
“There was no delay in Police intervention in the incident that occurred in the residence of the DSP. 4 Police personnel and 1 personnel of the NSCDC on duty at the residence of the DSP at the time of the incidence have been arrested and currently in detention for investigation.”
