Three people were killed and seven others injured after a gunman armed with an AR-style rifle opened fire outside a busy In-N-Out Burger restaurant in Twin Falls, Idaho, on Saturday, in one of the deadliest mass shootings in the state in recent years.
According to authorities, the shooting unfolded shortly after 2pm local time at the newly opened restaurant, which was crowded with customers at the time.
Witnesses said the attacker initially fired at a parked Tesla before moving towards the restaurant and opening fire in the busy shopping plaza.
An eyewitness told reporters that an older motorist who witnessed the attack stopped his vehicle, drew a handgun and returned fire at the gunman, forcing him to seek cover and potentially preventing further casualties.
The witness later remained at the scene to assist an injured restaurant employee until emergency responders arrived.
Authorities have not yet officially confirmed whether the armed civilian fatally wounded the attacker.
The attack triggered panic inside the restaurant as customers and staff fled through rear exits and sought refuge in nearby businesses and car parks.
Videos circulating on social media showed terrified patrons running for safety while gunfire echoed across the shopping centre.
Police swiftly secured the area and confirmed there was no continuing threat to the public.
The suspected gunman was found dead near the scene, although investigators have yet to determine whether he died from police action, gunfire from the armed bystander or a self-inflicted wound.
The injured were taken to St. Luke’s Magic Valley Medical Center, where several were reported to be in critical condition.
Authorities have not released the identities of the victims or the suspect as families continue to be notified.
Twin Falls Police, assisted by federal investigators, have launched a full investigation into the motive behind the shooting.
Officials said hundreds of witnesses are being interviewed and evidence from the scene is being examined.
