Tragedy struck yesterday in Gausawa community, Malale Ward of Borgu Local Government Area, Niger State, when a boat carrying 90 passengers capsized, leaving 29 people dead.
The Director-General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Alhaji Abdullahi Baba-Arah, confirmed the incident in a statement today.
He said the boat, which departed from Tungan Sule in Shagunu Ward and was headed to Dugga for a condolence visit, collided with a tree stump around 11.30am, causing it to overturn.
According to him, 29 bodies have so far been recovered, 50 passengers rescued alive, while two others remain missing as search and rescue operations continue.
Baba-Arah attributed the tragedy to overloading and the collision with the tree stump, warning that such risks must be avoided to prevent further loss of lives.
