Tragedy struck in Kano State as 23 people lost their lives, and 48 others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a horrific auto crash.
The accident occurred on the evening of Tuesday, February 13, along the Zaria-Kano Road in the Gaya Local Government Area.
According to a statement from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the crash involved a Toyota bus and an articulated vehicle.
Preliminary investigations revealed that excessive speed and reckless overtaking led to a collision, followed by a fire outbreak that engulfed the vehicles.
FRSC Sector Commander for Kano State, Zubairu Mato, confirmed the figures, adding that emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene to provide assistance.
Injured victims were rushed to Gaya General Hospital for treatment, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at the hospital morgue.
Mato expressed condolences to the families of the victims and urged drivers to prioritise safety by adhering to traffic regulations, including speed limits and proper overtaking procedures.
Authorities have pledged to increase public awareness campaigns and enforce stricter penalties for traffic violations to curb such tragic occurrences.
