A mid-air collision between two small aircraft at Fort Morgan Municipal Airport in Colorado yesterday has left one person dead and three others injured, according to officials.

The Federal Aviation Administration and local authorities said the accident occurred just before 10.45am when a Cessna 172, on final approach, was struck by an Extra Flugzeugbau EA 300 as both planes attempted to land simultaneously.

Both aircraft crashed and caught fire after the collision.

Deputies from the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that two men in the Cessna suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene. One occupant of the EA 300 was taken to hospital, while the other was pronounced dead at the scene by the county coroner.

Emergency crews including local police, firefighters, ambulance services and the state patrol responded to the crash site, assisted by citizens who tried to put out the flames before fire trucks arrived.

Thick black smoke rising from the wreckage was visible for miles, prompting the temporary closure of Fort Morgan Municipal Airport.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board have launched a formal investigation into the cause of the accident. A preliminary report is expected in the coming days.

Mid-air collisions remain extremely rare, but aviation experts note that smaller municipal airports where different types of aircraft share airspace pose unique safety challenges.

Investigators are expected to examine pilot communication, traffic coordination and landing protocols as part of their probe.

The crash is one of the deadliest aviation incidents in Colorado this year and has renewed focus on general aviation safety standards at regional airports.
