At least 19 people have been killed and 24 others injured in a bus crash in northern Iran today.

This is coming barely 24 hours after an air crash that killed 176 people in the Iranian capital, Tehran.

The vehicle plunged into a gorge in the Veresk area of Mazandaran province, about 130km east of Tehran, according to local news agency, Isna.

Officials reportedly blamed the crash on brakes failure.

A pregnant woman and four children under the age of six were said to be among the victims.

Iran has one of the worst road safety records in the world, with about 15,000 people killed annually in traffic-related accidents.
