Thirteen students of University of Lagos (UNILAG), who stormed the TV Continental (TVC) station in Lagos yesterday protesting the rustication of their mate, have ended up in Kirikiri prison.
The students, who are expected to start their semester examinations on Monday, were arrested and charged to court by the police for alleged unlawful invasion of TVC premises.
They were dragged to a Special Offences Mobile Court in Oshodi, Lagos, where a Chief Magistrate ordered that they should be remanded in prison.
Those involved were identified as: Femi Adeyeye, Toni Aina, Qadri Yaya, Asimi Oladimeji, Ismail Olalekan, Segun Okesola, Abdulazeez Soneye, Idris Abogunloko, Muyiwa Olaniyi, Toheed Oladimeji, Joseph Akanni, Lukumon Olusegun, and Abiodun Agbeniyi.
They were charged before Chief Magistrate P.E Nwaka, on two counts bordering on unlawful invasion and disruption of activities.
The prosecutor, CSP Effiong Asuquo, said that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 168 (1) (d), and Section 2 of the Criminal Law, Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
They all pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were arraigned at about 10.20 am today.
The magistrate, however, ordered their remand at the Kirikiri prison pending their bail application.
The court adjourned the case till April 6, for a determination of their bail.
Asuquo had told the Court that the 13 students committed the offence yesterday.
He said that the accused had engaged in a riotous invasion of TVC station in Lagos, protesting an alleged rustication of their mate.
According to him, the students also invaded the main campus of the University of Lagos, Akoka, and allegedly disrupted normal activities in the institution.
The prosecutor said that the Institution’s semester examination was scheduled to begin on April 3, adding that the invasion by the students was simply a ploy to stall the commencement of exams.
