At least 114 people, including 63 children, have been killed and 35 others wounded in a series of deadly attacks on a kindergarten and a nearby hospital in Sudan’s South Kordofan state, the World Health Organisation has confirmed.

WHO Director General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said the attacks, which took place on December 4, began with repeated strikes on the kindergarten.

He added that paramedics and emergency responders were also targeted while attempting to evacuate injured children to a neighbouring rural hospital.

“This is deeply disturbing”, Tedros said in a post on X, noting that both the rescue operation and the health facility itself came under further attack.

According to the WHO’s surveillance database, heavy weapons were used in the assault.

Most of the children were killed in the initial strike on the kindergarten, while parents and medical personnel were among those later killed during the evacuation and at the hospital.

Sudan’s Foreign Ministry condemned the attacks and blamed the Rapid Support Forces, alleging that the group used drones during the operation.

The RSF did not immediately respond to requests for comment. It has previously denied deliberately targeting civilians and has said it will investigate any alleged violations by its fighters.

Health facilities in Sudan have repeatedly been hit during the country’s two and a half year civil war. A similar mass killing was reported in October in the city of al-Fashir.

Survivors of the latest attack have been transferred to another hospital, while urgent appeals have been made for medical supplies and blood donations to treat the wounded.
